RESORT LATITUDE ZERO - TELO ISLANDS

Introduction

The Batu Islands, also known as the Telo Islands, consist of three large main islands and some 48 smaller islets. Located on the equator (at latitude zero degrees, hence our name), the Telos are situated between Pulau Nias and the Mentawai Islands. This places them strategically in the centre of an archipelago stretching along the west coast of Sumatra, an area, which over the last decade, has become one of the great surfing meccas of the world.
Resort Latitude Zero is set within a natural coconut garden on its own paradise island (a cliché perhaps, but there’s really no other word for it). The beautiful sandy beach around the headland where the resort sits is lapped by clear, calm, aqua-toned waters with no offshore fringing reef, making it perfect for boat access, swimming and relaxing. And it’s also safe for kids, too.
The main building consists of a modest complex of two beautiful pole-construction, timber Queenslander-style buildings. A separate open kitchen and dining gazebo sits between the two ‘houses’, overlooking our 7x14 meter in-ground infinity swimming pool. Resort Latitude Zero looks down to the beach and natural boat harbour, where our speedboats await at floating pontoons just offshore.

The Wave ...

The Telo islands have been blessed with a variety of waves suitable for all levels of surfer. Beginners, cruisers, long boarders, stand up paddle boarders, advanced short board surfers and even professionals all find waves they love here. To date, we have surfed over 40 quality waves in the area, all of them accessible via fast speedboat from the resort.

Natural Heaven ...

The waves are consistently 3-5 foot, significantly increasing in size when larger swells roll up the Indian Ocean from an area some 3,000nm southward known as the Roaring Forties. We have high quality lefts and rights – though what makes the area a bit different and uncharacteristic for Indonesia, is a surplus of rights over lefts. We have many less intense deepwater waves to suit long-boarders, SUPs and those not quite up to risking life and limb riding monster barrels. There are also plenty of shallower, across-the-reef-style barreling waves that can’t be called anything but world-class setups.

Queenslander-style comfort...

The main building consists of a modest complex of two beautiful pole-construction, timber Queenslander-style buildings. A separate open kitchen and dining gazebo sits between the two ‘houses’, overlooking our 7x14 meter in-ground infinity swimming pool. The entire complex looks down to the beach and natural boat harbour, where our speedboats await at floating pontoons just offshore.

The homes sport colour-bond roofing with insulated and cladded walls, plus large eaves offering undercover wraparound timber verandahs along the top floor. Guests enjoy a soothing sea breeze and outstanding 270 degree ocean views. On the top floor of both homes is a large chill-out lounge area with large flatscreen TV. High ceilings, fans and many louvers maximize the natural cooling effect. Each house features six air-conditioned bedrooms on the top floor, two of which have en suite bathrooms. All bedrooms are interchangeable to suit varying needs – they can be fitted out as family rooms, twin-share kids’ rooms or very private couples hideaways. Each bedroom has a set of louvers and French doors leading out to your own section of verandah.

Extra Amenities...

The lower levels of both homes are open plan and at the same elevation as the garden and pool. The south house has storage rooms for bags and boards, a small gymnasium and entertainment area. Below the north house is our main office area, with library/chill-out area, massage tables, kitchen stores, etc. The boatshed houses all our marine toys, and is right on the beach facing our harbour. Staff quarters extend behind this building.
Holiday Options
With the charter vessel Nomad on our team, we have the opportunity to organize exclusive, exciting surf holidays to secret and barely touched breaks. Until now, combo holidays had never been on offer in North Sumatra. We bring together the best of both worlds – stay one week in our resort surfing the entire Telo island chain, then jump aboard Nomad and surf the northern breaks like Nias, Hinako and Banyaks for your second week. (Alternatively, we can sail south to the Mentawais for a week.)

Non-surfers Well Spoiled...

Another great option is to first jump aboard Nomad for a week or 10 days, surfing wherever the captain says is going off, while the ladies and/or kids fly into Telo to spend a week in the resort with the loved ones. You surf and maintain family harmony all in one go – no simple feat at most resorts. We have scheduled our resort and Nomad’s excursions into week-long slots running from Saturday through Saturday each week. This also fits well with transfers and logistics to and from Padang and the islands.

Surf holiday combos...

  • Got your own fantasy holiday package? Email us your idea and we’ll endeavour to put it together for you. Currently, we offer the following fixed holiday packages:
  • Resort only, 7 or 14 days
  • Nomad only, 7 or 14 days
  • Combo #1 – Resort 1 week, Nomad 1 week
  • Combo #2 – Nomad 1 week, resort 1 week

Our guests may want to opt for a 10 to 12-night trip rather than the full 14 nights. This is often possible, pending booking availabilities.
We’ll always try to tailor a trip to your needs.
